Secrets, surprises and shenanigans abound as the Tates and the Campbells have relationships as complex as those in a Russian novel-but a lot more fun for the reader. The well to do Tate family is made up of Chester (Robert Mandan), who has a wandering eye, Jessica (Katherine Helmond), who has a wandering mind, and their three children. There's Corinne (Diana Canova), who loves men, and Eunice (Jennifer Salt), who doesn't. Billy (Jimmy Baio), their teenage son, is the only sane member of the family, according to Benson (Robert Guillaume), their sardonic major-domo. On the other side of town lives Mary Dallas Campbell (Cathryn Damon), Jessica Tate's younger sister, who is astonishingly well adjusted despite being married to Burt (Richard Mulligan), who takes a lot of adjusting to. Mary has two sons by her former husband, one of whom has a troublesome link with organized crime, and the other, Jodie (Billy Crystal) looks better in his mother's dresses than she does.
