TORRI HIGGINSON

Torri Higginson stars as Dr. Elizabeth Weir, a specialist in diplomatic relations who leads the Stargate Atlantis team on a daring expedition to the distant Pegasus galaxy. On television, Higginson starred for two seasons as the lead character Katherine in the dramatic series “The City,” winning a Gemini Award for Best Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role. She has guest starred on the crime drama “Tom Stone,” “The Outer Limits,” “Highlander,” “The Raven,” “PSI Factor,” “Hidden Room,” “E.N.G.” and “Forever Knight,” and was also a series lead on William Shatner’s “TekWars.” She performed lead roles in the Stephen King mini-series “Storm of the Century,” and the television movies “Twas the Night before Christmas,” “Family Cops III” with Charles Bronson, and “The Absolute Truth” with Jane Seymour. Additionally, Higginson starred on the Showcase Original Series “Bliss,” based on stories which explore the desires and passions of women and, most recently, she appeared in one of “The Shield Stories,” television adaptations of a select number of short stories by acclaimed Canadian author Carol Shields.

Her feature film credits include the role of Mary in the acclaimed feature film “The English Patient, a lead role in “Airborne” starring Colm Feore and Steve Guttenberg, the dramatic independent film “Turning Paige,” and the crime drama “Irish Eyes Are Crying.”

Born in Ontario, Higginson moved to England at the age of 18 to apprentice under voice and text coach Patsy Rodenburg. Through that experience she was introduced to actors and the acting process and subsequently returned to London a year later to study acting at the Guildhall College of Music and Drama.

Among her stage credits are the role of Maggie in director Robin Phillips production of “The Mill on the Floss” for the World Stage Festival in Toronto, as well as “Zadie’s Shoes,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” “Love and Other Games,” “Weldon Rising,” “Three Tall Women,” “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” and “MacBeth” for the Hungarian Arts Festival in Budapest.

While living in Los Angeles, Higginson adopted an abandoned mixed breed dog and named her Paloma Sedgewick Saddie Street or “Sedge” for short. In January of 2003, because of Sedge’s surprisingly gentle nature, Higginson became involved with the animal therapy program, Create A Smile, a national charitable organization which uses the human/animal bond as a therapeutic tool in helping patients recover from a variety of physical, physiological and psychological impairments. She and Sedge committed to visiting patients at least once a week. As well, she volunteered her time on numerous weekends to Food On Foot, a non profit organization which provides the poor and homeless of Los Angeles with food, clothing and other assistance.
