In modern-day California, five women and one enigmatic man meet to discuss the works of Jane Austen and find their love lives playing out in a 21st century version of her novels.

Sylvia (Brenneman) is shocked when her husband Daniel (Smits) leaves her after 20+ years & 3 children. Jocelyn (Bello), her unmarried best friend, distracts herself from her unacknowledged loneliness by breeding dogs. Prudie (Blunt) is a young French teacher, in possession of a worthy husband yet distracted by persistent fantasies about sex with another man. The many-times married Bernadette (Baker) develops a yearning for one more chance at happiness. Beautiful, risk taking Allegra (Grace), Sylvia & Daniel’s lesbian daughter, has quit speaking to her lover. And Grigg (Dancy), a young science fiction fan & computer whiz, seems both horribly out of place and obliviously at ease as the only man to be invited into the book circle.

Based on the critically acclaimed novel of the same name by Karen Joy Fowler. The film is directed by Robin Swicord and stars Kathy Baker, Maria Bello, Marc Blucas, Emily Blunt, Hugh Dancy, Lynn Redgrave, Jimmy Smits and Amy Brenneman.

The Jane Austen Book Club was written by Karen Joy Fowler and published to great acclaim in 2005. It was a huge bestseller in the UK and US, and was picked for the famous Richard & Judy Book Club.

Karen Joy Fowler was born in 1950 in Bloomington, Indiana. At the age of 30 she started to write books, first publishing science fiction stories, followed by the novels Sarah Canary, The Sweetheart Season and Sister Noon and a short story collection, Black Glass. The Jane Austen Book Club is Karen’s fourth novel.
